Answer About 5 to 7 days. Give it lots of water with liquid fertiliser once it begins to shoot up but don't drown it or let it dry out.

Roots go down, but to avoid damage side ways works to. Do not plant then very deep or it lowers the chances of the sprout breaking through the surface.
